IN THE BEGINNING…
Following God’s calling, Pastor Linn Winters and his wife Lisa came to Chandler In 1995 with two other couples to plant a church with a three-point focus:
- Teach God’s word in a way that is practicable and relevant.
- Worship authentically — in a way that supersedes singing in church and becomes how we live our lives.
- Be a place where kids would want to come to church.
THE FIRST SPROUTING
Cornerstone took root as a couple dozen Chandlerites meeting in an apartment clubhouse in April 1995 to study the Bible. God brought more and more to that study until, in 1995, Cornerstone held its first Sunday Service at Kyrene de las Brisas Elementary School with 328 in attendance. Within one year we outgrew that location and moved to Apprende Middle School. Shortly, we began holding two services and started the important work of mission, including trips to Mexico and beyond.
THEN IT GREW…
In 1998, we began our lease at Hamilton High. By 1999, we had an average attendance of 500. Through the faithfulness of these people and God’s provisions, we were able to purchase land at our current location and break ground on our first building in January 2001. The first service on February 15, 2002 had 800 in attendance, meeting in the building that is now known as the Student Center.
By 2003 we were holding three services to accommodate the 1200-plus people attending each Sunday. It didn’t take long for us to realize the need to purchase more land and begin construction on a larger auditorium. In 2005 we celebrated our 10 year anniversary in the Phoenix Convention Center so that everyone could attend together. To accommodate our continuing growth, Sundays in our original auditorium had expanded to 2,800 people and six services. Again, Cornerstone attendees were faithful and God provided; on April 1, 2007 we held our first service in our current Worship Center with over 4,000 people attending.
Even as we continue growing, the real story of Cornerstone’s history is comprised of the stories of its individuals — of lives changed. With hundreds each year choosing to dedicate their lives to Christ, getting baptized, and giving sacrificially of their time, talents, and resources, the character of Chandler and surrounding communities are being shaped by the individuals who boldly take the good news of God’s redemption beyond the borders of our campus. With dozens of ministries focusing on specific needs of both the community and the body of believers at Cornerstone, we continue seeking to follow in the footsteps of Christ. We invite you to join us as we look forward with anticipation to what God has in store for the future of His church!
